When Love Comes To The Street
Sometimes people talk about love like it is only in movies or inside poems, but in real life love can also show face on the street we walk everyday. When love comes to the street, it don’t always look perfect or rich, sometimes it look rough and dusty like Lagos road during dry season. I use to believe love is only for fancy people in films, but growing up my parents always teach me that love is also caring for people around you, even when you don’t know their names.
I remember one time when we were kids in my area, one old woman was carrying heavy load from the market, nobody even look her side until one boy stopped his okada and help her carry the load down the street. That time I didn’t understand but later I realized that is also love, it don’t need Valentine card before it show. My mother always say that love is not only romance, it is respect, kindness, and patience, especially toward people who don’t have anyone.
When love comes to the street, it feel like the environment becomes lighter. If two lovers are walking and laughing, everybody around begin to smile small small without even knowing why. Even in Nigeria where life sometimes hard and police siren make noise, you will still see people sharing food, friends holding hand, siblings buying puff-puff for each other, and neighbors helping jump-start car when battery die. That small small act of love make the street feel peaceful, like for few minutes problem disappear.
Love can also be complicated on the street, because sometimes love get broken heart and argument, you see couple quarrel in public and you feel somehow shame for them. But that is human life, everything cannot be perfect. My father tell me that true love carry sacrifice, forgiveness and sometimes pain, but that is what make it strong. If love was always smooth, nobody will value it.
Also in this modern time, love on the street don change style. People go dey take selfie, record TikTok dance with their partner or friend, and it look sweet. But real love still show in simple things like giving someone seat in the bus, helping stranger cross road, or telling someone good morning with smile.
So in my own small thinking, when love comes to the street, it make the whole community feel human again. It reminds us that even if country get problem, money hard, and stress heavy, we still got heart and we still know how to care. And that one alone is something worth keeping.
