Good Will Hunting (1997) was both dramatic and charming.
Spoilers.
I liked 'Good Will Hunting', it will be a long time before I forget it. It was definitely unlike any movie I've seen before. Incredibly original. I couldn't tell you about a similar movie if I tried honestly. I played this movie simply for the sake of watching it because well, I had never seen it before and I figure I should check this off my bucket list. Everyone has always spoken highly of it. It's really crazy it took me this long to watch it but, I'm glad I did.
I admit this movie did blow my mind and has me deeply perplexed.
I find it both relatable and hard to relate too. I suppose this film is about conquering fear and realizing potential, but also I'm not a genius like Will so, a part of me finds that hard to get past. I'm kind of a point A to point B type of guy in many ways and so, I'm probably missing a deeper message with him being a super genius but I just find this perplexing in terms of relatability. But I easily relate to his fear, isolation and wanting to prevent catastrophe in life. This movie hits the nail on the head big time when touching on those topics I feel. Total bullseye there.
What makes this movie special is that it's unlike any drama I have seen. Will's life/upbringing was really dramatic and tragic, don't get me wrong. But 'Good Will Hunting' was also greatly charming, and funny and pretty inspiring. In fact what's crazy is I expected someone to backstab Will or hurt him at any moment. The complete lack of plot twists in the movie was astounding. This movie had perfectly timed peaks of intense drama and pleasant charming moments. But otherwise the film felt pretty neutral and/or just mildly dramatic throughout. Will's personality made the movie feel like a mystery more than anything else, and the people around trying to help him made it feel like a motivational film kinda. Combine this with the awesome film work, aesthetics and soundtrack/music, this film was just effortless entertainment. I am from the northeast and I have family up in New England. Boston was the first big city I ever visited as a kid during the best summer I ever had, so I did enjoy that backdrop all things considered.
As I said already, I am deeply perplexed by the movie, it's a mostly positive confusion I think. So my description here might be really strange and vague but, oh well.
I expected this movie to be like some type of indie film where it was overly introspective and sentimental. The film was pretty introspective, but the storytelling and acting was executed at a very high level that it worked well. Super smooth. Bravo to every actor involved. Robin Williams is a GOAT.
This movie is definitely worth another watch someday soon. I live everyday in near panic mode these days and this film was a fairly nice slap in the face I'd say. It was really deep. Or maybe it's not as deep as I think it is. I am a pro overthinker, which I guess isn't difficult or admirable, but still. Bottom line is that this was a good movie.
This scene right here was built different. Ben Affleck COOKED out of nowhere. Unbelievable!
