Cycling Around Maxwell on a Relaxing Sunday

One of my favorite days in a week is definitely Sunday because it is the time when I’m able to relax a bit and recharge for the next week ahead. After spending several days working in the office, I always feel like I need to go outdoors whenever the weather allows it. There is just something refreshing about being outside, feeling the warm sun on my skin, and seeing a different side of the city beyond my usual routine.

I believe many people can relate to this feeling, so I don’t need to explain it further. Sometimes, a simple walk or ride outside is already enough to make the day feel better.

For this cycling trip, I decided to explore around the Maxwell area.

During weekdays, Maxwell can be very busy because it is part of the business district. People are always walking quickly, cars are moving nonstop, and the whole area has that fast-paced city energy. But on weekends, it becomes a lot more relaxing. The streets are still alive, but the atmosphere is not as intense. It is the kind of place where you can slow down a bit and actually appreciate what is around you.

That is exactly why I thought it would be a great place to explore by bicycle.

I rented an Anywheel bicycle since I still have a valid bike pass. For me, the SGD 10 monthly pass is quite worth it, especially if you are able to use it regularly. Aside from being convenient, it also makes exploring the city more enjoyable. I like that I can just pick up a bike, start riding, and stop whenever I see something interesting. It gives me a lot more freedom compared to just taking public transport from one place to another.

Maxwell is one of those areas that has so many different things happening visually. There are modern buildings, old shophouses, temples, cafes, restaurants, and beautiful heritage-style architecture all within a short distance from each other. It is the kind of area where you don’t really need a fixed itinerary. You can simply cycle along the road and let your eyes decide where to stop.

That was what I did.

As I cycled around, I found myself stopping many times to take photos of the shophouses. I really like the character of these buildings. Some have colorful facades, wooden shutters, tiled roofs, and signboards that make them feel timeless. They stand beautifully against the newer buildings around them, and that contrast is what makes the area interesting. It feels like the old and new Singapore are standing side by side.

I also enjoyed looking up at the tall modern buildings nearby. Some of them have very bold designs, and from the street level they look even more impressive. It is amazing how one area can show so many layers of the city, from preserved architecture to towering residential and office buildings.

Another fun surprise during this ride was seeing some cool cars parked along the road. The yellow sports car was definitely my favorite. It immediately caught my attention because of how bright and clean it looked. There was also a red classic car that had so much personality. I’m not really a car expert, but I can definitely appreciate beautiful cars when I see them. Lol.

Toward the end of my ride, I reached Duxton Hill and continued cycling around the area. This part also has many beautiful buildings and a more relaxed weekend vibe. It felt nice to wander around without rushing, just enjoying the architecture, the streets, and the little details that I would probably miss on a normal busy day.

This cycling trip reminded me again why I enjoy exploring Singapore by bike. It turns even familiar areas into something new. Maxwell may be busy during the weekdays, but on a Sunday, it becomes a lovely place to slow down, wander, and appreciate the city from a different perspective.
