Fantastic Forsythia Friday [Bonsai]

Lots of yellow happiness blooming from my bonsai tree today.

When a tree that I have grown finally blooms, I take a step back to enjoy.

Every Spring my potted Forsythia tree blooms flowers for a week or so.

Above shows the tree two days ago.

Yesterday.

This morning the tree was in full bloom.

Flowers hang downward. Blooms are banana yellow, and very delicate. Buds hang on barely by a thread.

After the petals fall off, the new green leaves will emerge from the rest of the buds.

This tree has been growing in a training pot, which is really just a wire basket covered in window screen. The soil is a mixture of pine bark, lava rock, and pumice, and the top layer is entirely pumice. I can't help the reflection of the morning sun, but in this photo you can see the soil better. A couple of decorative rocks too.

It has been about four years now that I have been growing this tree from a cutting. Because it grows so fast and resists disease so well, this species can heal and recover from pruning quickly. We're starting to see more separation of branches forming this year. I like to prune the tree as soon as the flowers are gone. Wouldn't want to prune right before it blooms and ruin a perfect photo opportunity like this.

The Sweet Violets are also blooming. The Forsythia and the Sweet Violets both enjoy the cool, moist shade. Both are very invasive, but I think I can tame them.
