Steller's Jay
The Steller's Jay is beautiful with his black crested head and brilliant blue body. They tend to live in woodsy mountainous regions around here, but this one was in the city at Mt. Tabor park. I guess it was woodsy enough.
They make scratchy jay calls, but they are also good mimics. When I heard a bird mewing like a kitten, I had to climb under the low hanging skirt of a large pine tree to investigate.
He would pause just long enough to get a look at me, and then jump to another branch before I could take his picture, so, unfortunately, this is the best shot I got. But I'm still glad I could share!
Steller's Jays are in the corvid family, along with other types of jays, magpies, ravens, and, of course, crows. Corvids are passerines, which makes them songbirds!
