The Telephone is not Just a Communication Device

Humans have continued to prove time and time again why we are the superior race on the planet. Looking back to our history, there is clear evidence that there is a huge margin from how we started to where we are now. Humanity has continued to adapt, evolve and grow to make their lives easier and better thanks to their ability to think and produce tools necessary for their growth. Innovative minds work tirelessly to create groundbreaking technology that will forever continue to impact our way of life and how we interact with the environment. Out of all man's creation, THE TELEPHONE is one invention that caused a life changing shift to our existence.

The telephone was invented in the year 1876 by a Scottish scientist by the name of Alexander Graham Bell. The invention was a revolutionary breakthrough from a world where messages were handwritten and could spend months before arriving at its destination into a Utopia that friends, families and loved ones could connect, hear each other's voices through a device in a matter of seconds regardless of distance, forever changing the realm of communication. The telephone not only altered how conversations operated, it also created a doorway to countless possibilities, facilitated swift growth and general made life easier.

My father never gets bored of telling just how lucky these current generations are because of how effective and lightening-fast information travels. He once told me about the story of how he snuck out to send a letter to his father from lagos because his uncle refused to enroll him like he promised to do before he left the village. The letter took 7 months before he finally got a response from his father with the necessary finances to return back home. Societies were lowkey living in isolation oblivious and only got information way ahead of its occurrence.
The telephone finally found its way into Nigeria in 1886 as a result of colonialism used mainly to serve the purpose of the existing system. Years later, it became an accessible device that has shaped lives in the country and the world at large. Speed aside, there is just something about communicating orally that makes it superior to the others. You get to feel their mood, tone, excitement that comes with laughter and if you listen hard enough you can even feel the smile on the other side of the line. All these and many more are things handwriting can never truly express.

Telephones did not stop evolving, what was once a semi stationary bulky invention is now a pocketable device that can be carried anywhere without stress. The invention of the internet also made the telephone more versatile, creating new ways to interact, work and engage with other parts of the world amongst other things. Despite having these new features, they did not jeopardize the primary objective of the device - communication.

This innovation remains a pivotal tool for human development standing out amongst others. The telephone is not just a communication device, it is a tool that brings the whole world together as a single unit, breaking barriers and creating endless possibilities. I will forever remain grateful for being a part of this era because the existence of a smartphone gives me hope that life truly is worth living one social media content at a time.
