At recess, the tiniest snowman in the playground stands his shaky ground, guarding a patch of half-frozen gravel while the world around him turns to slush. His pebbled smile is already slipping, arms tucked in as if bracing against the warmer air, but for a few more minutes he’s still a proud little monument to winter, refusing to admit that recess — and the snow — are almost over.
