Infrared Photography - My First Try

As already announced, I am no longer limiting myself to light-painting and am now getting into photography with invisible light. The effort involved is somewhat greater than with normal photography. But you are rewarded with extraordinary pictures. I started my first attempts with IR photography. I will be experimenting in the UV range at a later date and will of course report back here.

Wie bereits angekündigt, beschränke ich mich nun nicht mehr auf das Light-Paining und steige nun in die Fotografie mit unsichtbaren Licht ein. Der Aufwand ist etwas größer als bei der normalen Fotografie. Dafür wird man mit außergewöhnlichen Bildern belohnt. Meine ersten Versuche startete ich mit der IR-Fotografie. Im UV-Bereich werde ich zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt experimentieren und natürlich hier berichten.

Where should I start? I became aware of this type of photography through @lichtkunstfoto. He also helped me choose the equipment and printed some parts for me on the 3D printer, for which I would like to thank him once again.
My IR equipment currently consists of a NIKON Z5 modified to full spectrum. The filters were removed from the camera's sensor for this purpose. Normal photography is no longer possible with the modified camera. I also bought an adapter for my Canon lenses. The one for some DIY filter inserts.

@lichtkunstfoto aufmerksam geworden. Er half mir auch bei der Auswahl der Ausrüstung und druckte mir einige Teile auf dem 3D-Drucker, wofür ich mich nochmals ausdrücklich bedanken möchte. Meine IR-Ausrüstung besteht im Augenblick aus einer auf Full Spectrum modifizierten NIKON Z5. Dafür wurden die Filter vom Sensor der Kamera entfernt. Normale Fotografie ist mit der modifizierten Kamera nun nicht mehr ohne Weiteres möglich. Außerdem kaufte ich mir einen Adapter für meine Canon-Objektive. Der einigen DIY-Filtereinsätzen.

I took my first IR shots during a short hike through the Teutoburg Forest. I was equipped with the converted NIKON Z5, which I had fitted with a FOTGA lens adapter converter ring for M42 42mm in order to be able to use an INDUSTAR lens. I screwed some step-up ring adapters onto the lens to mount an IR filter with 720nm.

Meine ersten IR-Shots nahm ich während einer kleinen Ausflug Wanderung durch den Teutoburger Wald auf. Ausgerüstet war ich mit der umgebauten NIKON Z5, die ich mit einem FOTGA Objektivadapter Konverter Ring für M42 42mm ausgerüstet hatte um ein INDUSTAR -Objektiv verwenden zu können. Auf das Objektiv schraubte ich einige Step-Up-Ring Adapter, um einem IR-Filter mit 720nm zu montieren.

I set off with this handy camera to take my first infrared photos. It wasn't really a good time because there were no leaves on the trees at the moment. But it was sunny and I really wanted to try out my new equipment.

Mit dieser handlichen Kamera machte ich mich auf den Weg, um meine ersten Infrarotaufnahmen zu machen. Der Zeitpunkt war eigentlich nicht so günstig, weil im Augenblick noch kein Laub an den Bäumen hängt. Aber es war sonnig und ich wollte meine neue Ausrüstung unbedingt mal ausprobieren.

Of course, the images had to be post-processed on the computer. In Darktable, the color channels were swapped in the color calibration. Compared to light painting, where virtually no post-processing is required, the effort involved in IR photography is somewhat higher.

Die Aufnahmen mussten natürlich am Computer noch nachbearbeitet werden. In Darktable wurden in der Farbkalibrierung die Farbkanäle getauscht. Gegenüber dem Lightpainting, wo so gut wie keine Nachbearbeitung anfällt, ist der Aufwand bei der IR-Fotogrfie etwas höher.

I found the first results very promising. So the next sunny weekend I went for another hike through the forest. This time I equipped the camera with a 16mm lens from VILTROX. Again I used the IR filter with 720nm.

Die ersten Ergebnisse fand ich schon sehr vielversprechend. Also wanderte ich am nächsten sonnigen Wochenende gleich nochmal durch den Wald. Diesmal rüstete ich die Kamera mit einem 16mm - Objektiv von VILTROX aus. Wieder verwendete ich den IR-Filter mit 720nm.

So I hiked almost the same route as the week before and photographed the same spots so that I could compare the pictures directly afterwards.

Ich wanderte also annähernd den gleichen Weg wie eine Woche zuvor und fotografierte die gleichen Spots, um die Bilder hinterher direkt miteinander vergleichen zu können.

I liked the results even better. Now I'm interested in testing all my lenses. I will also try out other filters with different wavelengths. I think there is still a lot of potential in this project before I get to light painting with invisible light. So stay tuned, I will report on it here.

Die Ergebnisse gefielen mir noch besser. Jetzt ist mein Interesse geweckt, alle meine Objektive testen. Zusätzlich werde ich noch weitere Filter mit anderen Wellenlängen ausprobieren. Ich glaube da steckt noch sehr viel Potenzial in diesem Projekt, bevor ich zum Lightpainting mit dem unsichtbaren Licht komme. Also bleibt gespannt, ich werde hier darüber berichten.
