POLICE BRUTALITY
I sat at the seat closest to the bus rider, you know the one by his side, I’m not really good with remembering the names of sitting positions so let’s just leave it at that. This man’s bus was rickety, the fuel gauge was faulty, the timer was faulty, the airbag was nonexistent, and so many things I can’t mention(because I don’t know their names) was missing from his bus, I began to wonder am I really in a moving coffin, Haba, na wa oo.
I then thought to myself well maybe it’s because of the economy, the cost of parts might have hiked so high that he couldn’t repair it anymore or it might be a rental, whilst my mind was wondering I quickly checked my watch and it was 7:23pm.
I noticed that tricycles had dwindled down so I asked, ‘where all the Keke Dey na’, the other passengers sneered at me and one replied ‘where you Dey since, you no know say because of all the thief thief dem don put Keke under curfew, from 7 Keke no Dey road again’. I thought to myself ‘Na bus dem fit no come thief’. Still drowning in my thoughts, our bus was flagged down, it was so swift, I didn’t even anticipate it, the bus driver started begging and saying ‘Abeg no vex, na mistake, forgive me’, ah ah why was he begging I thought to myself, Wetin him do.
Before I knew what was happening he was flogged or as my Nigerian brethren would say ‘them wipe am oraimo cord’. A grown man was been flogged because he overtook a military car, wow. I was so scared, he was bleeding from his face, we couldn’t do anything, we just sat and watched.
I should’ve done something I said to myself when I finally got home, but what, such brutality can’t just go unpunished, but what can I do, it still boggles my mind till date, this happened 4 months ago, I don’t think if I see him I can remember him, but the sight still remains fresh in my memories.
What would you have done differently?.
