English

Biological classification of the honey bee

To be able to classify the honey bees a little better I have created an overview picture.

Einordnung-Honigbiene.svg

The picture shows:

  1. in vertical direction from bottom to top the Biological Division into: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus Species and Race (population).
  2. in horizontal direction the different species like bees, wasps, ants etc.

Note: On the right side (blue) I have juxtaposed the classification of us humans, for a better orientation.

The next figure shows the honey bee breeds, which have formed from the Western honey bee species after the last great ice age about 12. years ago in Central Europe. All these breeds can be crossed and also used in breeding. Apis melifera melifera (called Dark European bee) was the dominant breed in Europe. Today these species are used by beekeepers all over the world depending on temperature, weather and climate.

Bees that collect honey and live in states - are called honey bees and belong to the genus of bees. Of these, 9 species are known:

  • Western honey bee,
  • Eastern honey bee,
  • Giant honey bee,
  • Himalayan giant honey bee,
  • Koschevnikov's honey bee,
  • Asian mountain bee,
  • Apis nigrocincta,
  • Dwarf Honey Bee,
  • Dwarf bush honey bee.

And only these are conceivable for us humans as honey suppliers.

Comparison to the genus bees with the genus humans

The Homo sapiens was for hundreds of thousands of years only one of several human species on earth. Until at least about 40,000 years ago, he shared his environment with other representatives of the genus Homo. An overview of the cousins known so far: Neanderthal man, Denisova man, Homo Heidelbergensis, Homo Naledi, and Homo Floresienis.

Genus

The genus honeybee as well as the bumblebees belong to the family of bees. The wild bees, which are not shown here, also belong to the family of bees (about 2000 wild bees are known in Europe alone).

Family

The genus hornets and wasps (short-headed & long-headed) belong to the family of fold wasps and are not bees.

Interesting to mention at this point are the ants. They share with the bees and the wasps the suborder of the stinging wasps (the sting of the ant is a bite with formic acid as poison).

Apropos Ameise

Apropo ant

Where there are ants in nature, honey bees also work very well. In other words: If you put your bees near an ant hill, you will usually get good forest honey. Why is that? Ants like to keep tree lice (lachnids) - they cherish, care for and even protect them. These aphids are then milked by the ants. They get a sugary excretion of the aphids as food. What is right for the ants is cheap for the honeybees. These also get this sugar solution😉.
