Stray cats
On Caturday, I think about the quiet lives we ignore.
Where I come from, a stray cat is rarely just a cat, it carries stories people didn’t write but somehow believe and whispers of bad luck, suspicion, things unseen.
A cat crossing your path can earn side-eyes, sharp warnings, even distance. It’s not always cruelty; sometimes it’s inherited fear, passed down like folklore, unquestioned.
But I have learned to sit with my own eyes, not borrowed ones.
The first time a stray cat lingered near my door, it didn’t look mystical or dangerous. It looked tired, it's fur told stories of survival, not superstition. It didn’t hiss or haunt, it waited, watching and measuring if kindness lived here.
I won’t lie, the voices echoed in my head, be careful. Don’t invite what you don’t understand but something quieter, stronger, spoke too: What if it’s just hunger? What if it’s just life trying to live?
So I chose differently, I didn’t rush to carry it inside. Trust was what I needed to, not demanding from it. I left food out first, from a distance, watched it eat like it hadn’t in days. The next day, it came back, not bold, but hopeful. And slowly, day by day, the gap between us softened.
What I’ve noticed about cats is this: they don’t beg for love the way dogs do. They negotiate it, they teach patience, boundaries, respect. A stray cat doesn’t hand you loyalty, you earn it in quiet and consistent ways.
And when it finally sits near you, not out of need but choice, it feels like a small miracle.
Taking a stray cat home isn’t just about shelter, it’s about unlearning. It’s about choosing compassion over inherited fear. It’s about realizing that not everything we were warned about is meant to harm us, some things are just misunderstood.
I still hear the whispers sometimes, the sideways glances. The subtle questions: Why would you bring that home?
But I’ve seen what they haven’t.
I’ve seen a creature soften, i’ve seen fear turn into familiarity. I’ve seen how something once avoided can become a quiet companion, curling into the corners of your life without chaos.
So this Caturday, I’m choosing my own narrative.
Not every stray is a warning, some are just waiting to be seen.
I hope this reasonates with us all
