Flashback Friday 1973

Hello and welcome to my fourth installment of Flashback Friday where I present a few things from history that caught my eye and tweaked my memory on my search.

News Headlines and History

  • Jan 22nd Roe v. Wade: The U.S. Supreme Court overturns state bans on abortion.

Roe v. Wade prompted a national debate that continues today about issues including whether, and to what extent, abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, what methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication, and what the role should be of religious and moral views in the political sphere. Roe v. Wade reshaped national politics, dividing much of the United States into pro-life and pro-choice camps, while activating grassroots movements on both sides.

45 years later the issue still divides the American Populace. One of those things that I guess after this long will still always affect American Politics.

It was this protest out of many that really brought to light many of the ill treatment and lack of respect for American Indians. It is a shame that in many ways the lack of respect continues to this day.

  • October 10 - Spiro T. Agnew resigns as Vice President of the United States and then, in federal court in Baltimore, pleads no contest to charges of income tax evasion on $29,500 he received in 1967, while he was governor of Maryland. He is fined $10,000 and put on 3 years' probation. This I found pretty interesting, and did not really know.

"He was the 39th Vice President of the United States from 1969 until his resignation in 1973. He is the second and most recent officeholder to resign the position, after John C. Calhoun in 1832."

And one other wiki fact I found and did not know: - - Ford is the only person to have served as both vice president and president without being elected to either office.

A Couple Science and Technology Headlines

April 3 – The first handheld mobile phone call is made by Martin Cooper of Motorola in New York City. A short 45 years ago story from AARP. Not so long ago. Phones have come a long long way.

May 14 - Skylab, the United States' first space station, is launched. Nasa: Skylab: America’s First Space Station This was an event that many people still can sort of remember.

Music

The Number one song for the year was: "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" By: Dawn featuring Tony Orlando.

The Paris peace accords were signed troops were coming home, people were looking forward.

For me the real hit of 1973 was: Pink Floyd releases The Dark Side of the Moon, which goes on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album debuts on the Billboard 200 on March 17, reaches #1 on April 28, and eventually logs the all-time record of 741 weeks on that chart. Source: Wiki

Conclusion

It was a pretty turbulent year for a lot of things, the US Dollar crashing 10%, Vice President resignations, on going Watergate issues, Paris peace accords, people coming home, people dying at home for tribal rights. things would start to change for society, some of the changes good, some of the changes only fleeting like wars and coming homes, one day maybe no more, but yeah we all have our pipe dreams. And we can not forget about Shoes, shoes you say, yes I say shoes, The Marcos rise to power. unfortunately unless I really dug, the only thing I remember is Shoe Collections.

Sorry no Cars today, ran out of time, did not prep, for when resources would be available, should have would have could haves, all the same things didn'ts. I did look back a lot in history on steemit though, just could have spent better time by pre-prepping my post here, but I like to do them on the fly as feel, so my apologies if you were waiting for the post to learn about the number one car of 1973. Hopefully all's well in steemit land, and we can all get back to a semi normal, oh well that fork is over done and heated out of shape, but it is what it is attitude.
