Barry freaks out and rages on police in a hyperarousal episode of PTSD
This hardcore outburst on the police is a symptom of my mental health condition known as PTSD. When the officer snuck up behind me, I was experiencing a cluster of PTSD symptoms known as "Hyperarousal." Symptoms of hyperarousal include:
- Feeling keyed up or on edge
- Feeling more irritable or having outbursts of anger
- Feeling constantly on guard or like danger is lurking around every corner
- Being jumpy or easily startled
I lived with these torturous symptoms because of the roll I played in the drug war, my activism, and constant police retaliation. I recently suffered a raid, multiple arrests and losing my son at the time of this incident.
It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it.
My struggle with PTSD continues but I have managed to turn most of my Post traumatic stress into Post Traumatic Growth.
