SHADOW HUNTER CONTEST/ SMASH- Round 375: SHADOW HUNTING IN THE MARKET PLACE

My first impression was the sight of ponmo meat displayed right at the entrance of the marketplace. It looked appealing and tempting to buy—I really liked it. Ponmo is often used to prepare vegetable soup such as egunsi soup, a favorite dish in my family. Figure 1 illustrates that ponmo (cowhide meat) is available in both dried and fresh (wet) forms.

Figure 2 depicts jerrycan sellers showcasing a variety of plastic containers commonly used for storing and transporting water, oil, and other liquids. These sellers are often found at strategic spots or corridors within the marketplace, catering to the daily needs of households and small businesses. The image highlights the practical nature of these goods and the informal economy's role in providing essential items.

Figure 3 captures fish and plantain vendors actively engaged in selling their goods. The scene reflects the vibrant market atmosphere, where fresh fish and ripe plantains are common staples, often displayed side by side to attract buyers. These items are essential ingredients in many local dishes and represent the everyday hustle of small-scale traders.

Figure 4 offers a clearer and more detailed view of the fish seller’s stall. While the arrangement of fish and the vendor’s interaction may draw attention, the primary focus here is on the shadows, how they fall across the scene, adding depth and subtle contrast.

The beautiful display of light and shadow helps convey the time of day and the atmosphere of the market, providing a visual narrative beyond the subjects themselves.
