I never thought how the phrase “for the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows”, said by Paul in Timothy, made sense. The unbridled pursuit of money and pleasure will always end in succumbing to hedonism, and its damage to the individual's soul is greater than just a mere momentary fragment of pain.

It is not possible to serve God and Mammon, and it is not possible to love silver and the cross at the same time. When you live for silver, you live for what it can give you, simply forgetting anything beyond that that may exist. This is hedonism, it is the pursuit of pleasure for its own sake, and it is not only condemned biblically, but also in other beliefs, such as Buddhism.

This does not mean that money is to blame for all evil. Terrible crimes have been committed against humanity, motivated by things other than money, and there are examples of this in the Bible, such as Cain and Abel, or the violence against the angels in Sodom. Yet atrocities are done every day in the name of money or for the love of money. Above all, many perversities are done day after day in the name of passion for the pleasures of this world, which can be metaphorically materialized in the form of money (as it is the most common way of acquiring them).

However, money is important for all of us, and acquiring and using it is important so that we can live in this world, and there is nothing wrong with simply enjoying having a comfortable life. However, we must always keep in mind that irrational passion for worldly pleasures is reprehensible, and that moderation is good and prudent, both in the way of obtaining and in the destination of money.

Never let yourself be drunk by pleasure and greed.

Eu nunca pensei como a frase “o amor ao dinheiro é a raiz de todo mal, e nessa cobiça alguns se desviaram da fé e se traspassaram a si mesmos com muitas dores”, dita por Paulo em Timóteo, fazia sentido. A busca desenfreada por dinheiro e por prazer sempre acabará em sucumbir ao hedonismo, e seus danos à alma do indivíduo são maiores do que apenas um mero fragmento de dor momentâneo.

Não é possível servir a Deus e a Mamon, e não é possível amar a prata e a cruz ao mesmo tempo. Quando você vive pela prata, você vive pelo que ela pode te proporcionar, simplesmente se esquecendo de qualquer coisa além disso que possa existir. Isso é hedonismo, é a busca do prazer apenas pelo próprio prazer, e não é condenado apenas biblicamente, mas também em outras crenças, como o budismo.

Isso não significa que o dinheiro é culpado por todos os males. Crimes terríveis foram feitos na humanidade, motivados por coisas alheias ao dinheiro, e há exemplos disso na Bíblia, como Caim e Abel, ou a violência contra os anjos em Sodoma. Ainda assim, atrocidades são feitas todos os dias em nome de dinheiro ou por amor ao dinheiro. Acima de tudo, muitas perversidades são feitas dia após dia em nome da paixão pelos prazeres deste mundo, que podem ser materializadas metaforicamente na forma de dinheiro (pois é a forma mais usual de os adquirir).

Porém o dinheiro é importante para todos nós, e adquirir utilizar este é importante para que possamos viver neste mundo, e não há nada de errado em simplesmente gostar de ter uma vida confortável. Entretanto, devemos sempre ter em mente que a paixão irracional pelos prazeres mundanos é reprovável, e que a moderação é boa e prudente, tanto no modo de obtenção quanto no destino do dinheiro.

Jamais se deixe embriagar pelo prazer e pela ganância.
