Racial diversity in education.

That’s sort of true (she's actually 68 now). She was the first integrated by federal court order. Segregation had already been outlawed in many state prior to Brown vs The Board of Education. I think segregated schools were the law in 18 states at the time of that decision.

The first black person to be integrated into an all white school that I know of was Sarah Harris in 1832, at a private school in Connecticut. The backlash from the community was severe. The school was forced to close within a couple years and the owner was arrested, but the ball started rolling. More schools stated integrating..

This is a battle that has been going for a long time. Attitudes change slowly. I think the point of the picture is that this is still recent history, that the fight is not over and with that I wholly agree.

In fact, recent studies into racial diversity in education have found that, thanks in large part to districting, schools are more segregated now than they were the day Ruby Bridges was escorted into William Frantz Elementary School. There’s still much to be done and it’s not too late to be a part of this long running and crucial movement.
