🐜 Inside the Nest – My Messor barbarus Colony Is Exploding With Brood

A few months ago this colony consisted of only:

• one queen
• 5 workers
• and some brood

Now the entire nest feels alive.

The biggest difference compared to the early days is no longer just the number of ants — it’s the organization inside the colony.

🥚 Massive Brood Development

One of the most impressive things right now is the amount of brood inside the nest.

Large piles of:

• larvae
• pupae
• freshly developing workers

can now be seen in multiple chambers.

The colony seems to be in a very strong growth phase at the moment.

Compared to the first months, there is now almost constant movement inside the nest:
workers care for brood, transport seeds and continuously reorganize different nest areas.

🐜 Different Workers – Different Tasks

As the colony grows, the division of labor becomes much easier to observe.

Smaller workers are often busy with:

• brood care
• sorting seeds
• working inside the nest

while larger workers are usually:

• active in transport work
• exploring the arena
• or moving larger seeds and materials

The entire colony now appears far more coordinated and stable than during the founding stage.

🌾 Seed Storage Everywhere

The colony’s seed storage has also grown significantly.

Different types of seeds are:

• collected
• transported
• sorted
• and stored in separate areas

This behavior is one of the things I enjoy most about keeping Messor species.

It almost feels like the colony is organizing its own miniature supply system.

♻️ The Trash Chamber

One thing I find especially fascinating is how clearly the colony separates different areas inside the setup.

Over time, the ants started creating a dedicated area for waste.

It now contains:

• trash
• larval remains
• dead ants
• empty seed husks
• remains of feeder insects
• dead organic material
• and general colony waste

Instead of spreading waste randomly across the setup, the colony actively concentrates it in one specific location.

The amount of material already collected there is honestly impressive.

Small details like this really show how organized larger ant colonies become.

The longer I keep this species, the more interesting their behavior becomes.

At this point it’s no longer just about colony size.

It’s about:

• organization
• division of labor
• brood care
• food storage
• and the development of a complex functioning system

And that is exactly what makes watching this colony develop over months so fascinating.
