Budget cuts

The province of Ontario just cut 80 million dollars from family and child services from the city of Toronto.

That money was designated to the oversight of checking on 6166 youth that are in the foster care system.

The way the program works is children are apprehended (which is an issue unto itself) and put in spaces where they’re supposed to be care for, and there’s another level to check in on them to make sure they aren’t being abused and receiving proper care.

In the past, we’ve already seen in Toronto (and across Canada) that the system isn’t working. Kids aren’t being looked after, social workers aren’t checking in on them; and the kids are suffering for it.

So how do we fix it?

Well, you don’t cut 80 million dollars out of the budget for it. The cuts are going to wipe out programs to keep kids with their families, they’re going to fire workers that perform the oversight.

And it’s the kids that are going to be forgotten and lost in whatever world they’re facing.
