Steps Between the Lines

Those white lines on the busy city street watch thousands of footsteps cross over them every day. Some people are in a hurry some are lost in thought and some just move forward on their journey in silence. A crosswalk isn’t just a path it becomes a passage of moments where each person walks carrying their own story. Sometimes drenched in raindrops sometimes glowing in the golden evening light this place holds a strange kind of life.

A child crosses the street fearfully while holding his mother’s finger while on the other side an old man takes slow steps lost in memories of the past. Some people don’t even know each other yet for a few seconds they walk together on the same line. Maybe life is like that too where paths meet for a little while and then part ways. The crosswalk remains a silent witness to these brief encounters.

At night, when car lights streak long lines across the road the crosswalk looks like something out of a movie scene. Far off, the sound of someone’s footsteps, the soft laugh from someone’s phone and the day’s exhaustion on someone’s face all of it comes together to create a strange picture. Every person passing through carries a whole world inside them yet from the outside, they all just look like travelers.

Sometimes a person feels like they’re standing at a crosswalk. On one side is the road of the past on the other is the noise of the days to come. The only decision is when to take the step forward. Some people get scared some stop and some quietly keep walking. Maybe success belongs to those who have the courage to cross the road despite the fear.

The crosswalk is certainly an ordinary part of the city but if you look closely it teaches us a beautiful lesson about life. The roads will always stay busy the noise will never end, yet a person has to steady their steps and keep moving forward. Because life isn’t made for those who stop it’s made for those who keep walking.
