Night Rain

Night rain did not stop, as if the sky was aware of my presence. I stood in the middle of the street, staring at the sky, my eyes filled with the same watery light as before, but this time it made me feel different.
I saw a face in my mind's eye. The face of a girl I knew, who had died a long time ago, when I was still a boy. Her eyes were closed, and her lips were parted, as if she was about to say something. She looked so peaceful, so innocent, like she had just fallen asleep.

Night rain did not stop, as if it was waiting for a chance to wash away all the dust and grime that had accumulated over the past few days. It was the kind of rain that made the ground soft, and the trees sway back and forth while the leaves rustled with each movement. The cool air that swirled around them made her shiver from the cold.
"I've never been so cold in my life," she said, her voice muffled by the hood of her cloak. "How do you stand this weather?"
