AZL Book: Electrical Math - OpAmp Functionality

I remember reading somewhere (I believe it was in the OpAmp Handbook, by Texas Instruments) that the OpAmp was created by someone in the telephone industry, long ago, who was trying to solve the issue of signal degradation over the length of the phone lines. Cool! Either way, these clever little circuit blocks have become integral to all things we know and love today. Well, not sunsets, puppies, love, happiness, community, friendship, etc, but you know what I mean.

The above mentioned handbook has all kinds of cool examples of what can be accomplished with these little buggers. Here, all I wanted to do was create a brief record on how they function and what can be expected to come out, given a particular input.

For Vs+ and Vs- connections on top and bottom, the diagram at the top right is most descriptive, these are the rails; they set the min and max voltage values. The others are where things get a little frisky, because their functionality is determined by the manner of their connection. There are entire college level course on how to use these, so I won’t be getting into too much detail here, but the comparator circuit shown in the diagram is one of the easiest to understand in my opinion :)
