Truly Free Range

Someone once said "you've never had an orange until you've had it within the hour of it being plucked from the tree". As someone who's plucked his own oranges, I can attest to this statement. The taste is just not the same after the orange has spent days, even weeks, in the dark, being transported over thousands of miles.

The same goes for eggs, vegetables, and other things.

Breakfast; scrambled eggs with spring onions

Bright and early this morning, I was shown around the back garden-farm where the hens sleep. They only sleep there, they spend the rest of the day walking around the vast patch of land near the house, totally unmonitored. Truly free range. There were 4 eggs in the coop, still warm from being sat on. I have to admit, it beats getting my eggs at Tesco. There are no males in sight, so I suppose these are unfertilised eggs. To be honest I don't really know how that works.

We pulled out some bulbs of spring onions from the vegetable patch on the other side of the garden. Fresh onions smell so strong and green.

The neighbours had also made some bread, so we picked up some for breakfast - also still hot. It reminded me of buying hot baguettes from boulangeries in Senegal.

I'm a big fan of bread, sadly. Even though I'm trying to cut down on bread, how do you turn down a freshly made beauty like this one? I couldn't. Neither could I turn down sampling a piece each of the three flavours of home made cake :)
